Sooryavanshi Set To Take The World By Storm In Iyer Era
Following an excellent performance against Afghanistan, which confirmed our cricket predictions, India are now set to embark on a new era with Shreyas Iyer taking over captaincy duty ahead of the team’s two-match T20I series against Ireland.
Iyer succeeds Suryakumar Yadav, who has not just been relieved of the leadership role but has also been omitted from the squad for this series. Iyer’s first challenge comes in Belfast, where the series gets underway today at the Civil Service Cricket Club.
One of the most anticipated storylines of the series is the expected debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old opener from Bihar has already etched his name into the record books as the youngest player ever selected for India’s senior men’s team.
Sooryavanshi arrives in the national setup off the back of a sensational Indian Premier League campaign, where he won the coveted Orange Cap with 776 runs in 16 innings at a remarkable strike rate of 237.30 for the Rajasthan Royals. Speaking ahead of today’s match, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said:
"He is very talented, there is no doubt. In the way he has batted in the IPL and other games, there is no need to say he has the natural abilities. In the IPL, he has faced Jofra and many other quick bowlers, and it seems nothing is bothering him.”
However, despite the anticipation surrounding the potential debut of the teenage prodigy, Kotak also admitted that Sooryavanshi’s selection for the first T20I in Belfast is far from a given and affirmed that the captain and head coach would choose the team most suitable for the task at hand.
