In a potentially huge development for the cricketing world, Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg has confirmed that they are exploring the possibility of staging an Ashes Test in India in the near future. This comes after CA decided to take the Big Bash League opener to Chennai later this year.

Greenberg ‘Open’ to Ashes Test Being Played in India

Australia and England have faced off in the iconic Ashes rivalry since 1882, with the two nations alternating hosting duties in a series played roughly every four years. The Aussies won the most recent series 4-1 in 2025-26, while the next chapter is set for the summer of 2027 in England.

The two sides are also scheduled to meet in a one-off pink-ball Test at the MCG in March next year, marking the 150th anniversary of their first-ever encounter. Unlike a traditional Ashes series, the fixture will not be played with the coveted urn at stake.

Speaking to BBC Sport in the past week, Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg revealed that there is a possibility that the one-off fixture could be played in India, provided both the ECB and BCCI both bought into the idea. Greenberg said:

"It's not something that we are planning, but it's open for consideration. We'd have to be open to considering all options. Our relationship with the ECB and the BCCI is very strong, and clearly there are opportunities in India to put more content in certain areas."

Cricket Australia is already looking to strengthen its presence in India, with the Big Bash League set to venture overseas for the first time when the Melbourne Renegades take on the Perth Scorchers in Chennai this December.

The immense commercial power of the Indian market was highlighted in an ECB report earlier this year, which projected that English cricket would turn a significant profit thanks in large part to India’s recently completed white-ball tour of England.

Major Backroom Shake-Up for India Ahead of Sri Lanka Test

India’s cricket team is set for a major shake-up to its support staff, with assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip both leaving their roles, as confirmed by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia in the past week.

Ten Doeschate joined the India setup following the team’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024 and spent the past two years working with the national side. The former Netherlands international has now moved to IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders as the Head of Cricket Strategy.

Dilip, on the other hand, departs after five years with the national team. He worked under both former head coach Rahul Dravid and current boss Gautam Gambhir, playing a key role in the side’s fielding preparations during a successful tenure.

Following their 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe, India will next turn their attention to the ICC World Test Championship, with a two-match series against Sri Lanka scheduled to kick off in Galle on August 15.
