We are now under a month away from the start of the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup, but broadcasting agreements in two of the world’s largest football markets - India and China - have yet to be finalised, leaving major uncertainty around how millions of supporters will be able to watch the global tournament.

Ongoing Broadcast Negotiations Could Cost FIFA 22.6% of World Cup Reach

In a little over four weeks from today, the focus of football fans from across the globe will shift to North America, where the USA, Mexico and Canada will be co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which we will be covering throughout the tournament in our World Cup predictions

However, FIFA are now facing a major issue, with almost a quarter of the global reach for the tournament at jeopardy, owing to two of the most populous countries in the world, India and China, possibly set to miss out on watching the tournament due to non-confirmation of broadcast deals.

So far, FIFA has secured agreements in more than 175 territories, but discussions between the football governing body and India and China are still ongoing. It is understood that in India, the gap between FIFA’s expectations and broadcaster valuations appears to be a larger issue.

A reported joint venture between Reliance and Disney is said to have tabled an offer of around $20 million for the 2026 rights, well below FIFA’s original asking price of approximately $100 million before it was later revised downward!

Sony, another massive player in the Indian Market, is also believed to have withdrawn from talks, concluding that the deal is not commercially viable. Broadcasters are said to be hesitant due to anticipated challenges in attracting viewership, owing to the expected airing hours and advertiser interest, given the dominance of sports like cricket.

If FIFA fails to secure a broadcasting agreement closer to its target valuation, it could have wider implications for future media rights negotiations, potentially prompting broadcasters in other markets to reconsider the value of FIFA World Cup rights.

Fancode Steps Up for 2026 Unity Cup Broadcast in India

While the broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India remain up in the air, there is no issue regarding the airing of the 2026 Unity Cup, in which the Blue Tigers are set to participate alongside Nigeria, Jamaica and Zimbabwe later this month.

Indian sports streaming platform Fancode has secured the exclusive digital broadcasting rights for the 2026 Unity Cup, set to take place in London from May 27 to May 31. All the matches at the tournament will be played at The Valley, home of EFL Championship outfit Charlton Athletic.

The tournament marks the senior men’s national football team of India’s first tour of the United Kingdom since 2002. The Blue Tigers will face Jamaica in the second semi-final on May 27, with the winner progressing to the grand final on May 30.
