South Africa defied the odds at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday afternoon by securing an extremely impressive 76-run victory over India in their opening match of the 2026 T20 World Cup Super 8. The Proteas are still unbeaten in this year’s tournament, while that result marked India’s first loss in their title defence.

David Miller leads Proteas to commanding victory in Ahmedabad

South Africa sent a loud and clear message to the rest of the teams in the Super 8 at the 2026 T20 World Cup on Sunday when they recorded a commanding 76-run victory over defending champions India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to take the lead in Group 1.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, it looked as though the Proteas were in for a tough match, with Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh firing on all cylinders and picking up the wickets of Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickleton by the fourth over with just 20 runs on the board.

However, that brought Dewald Brevis and David Miller to the crease, and the pair steadied the ship for the visitors, producing a valuable partnership of 117/4 before the former was dismissed by Shivam Dube in the 13th over.

Despite the setback, Miller, who has been relatively quiet in this competition, reminded onlookers why he is considered one of the best middle-order batsmen in world cricket as he went on to smash 63 runs off just 35 balls, a knock that also confirmed our T20 World Cup prediction for the match.

Following his departure in the 16th over, Tristan Stubbs took charge and scored a quickfire 44 runs from 24 deliveries to navigate the 2024 World Cup runners-up to a solid total of 187/7 in their 20 overs.

India’s top order suffer costly collapse to end win streak

While India came through the group stage of this competition with a perfect record, most neutrals would agree that they were not at their best, having survived two proper scares against the US in their opening match and the Netherlands directly before the start of the Super 8s.

One of the major criticisms of the Men in Blue’s performances was the largely underwhelming performances from their top order, particularly the number one-ranked batter in T20Is, Abhishek Sharma, who had not scored a single run in the group stage of the competition.

This time, it was his opening partner Ishan Kishan who was sent back to the pavilion for a duck, and while Sharma did finally get off the mark in the competition, he only managed 15 runs before Marco Jansen knocked him over shortly after dismissing Tilak Varma for just one run.

Shivam Dube was the only Indian batsman who made any sort of worthwhile contribution, scoring 42 runs off 37 balls, but support from those around him never came, as Jansen went on to pick up 4/22, Keshav Maharaj claimed 3/24, and Corbin Bosch bagged 2/12 in three overs.

South Africa eventually bowled out the home side for just 111 in 18.5 overs, ending the reigning champions' 12-match unbeaten run in T20 World Cups, while also getting their revenge for their 2024 disappointment. India now have to bounce back against Zimbabwe on Thursday, or their title defence could be headed for an abrupt ending.
