Cricket: BCCI Responds to Claims of Gautam Gambhir for VVS Laxman Ahead of 2026 T20 World Cup

Secretary Denies Rumours, Backs Gambhir
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has come out swinging against the rumours, and he didn't mince his words. Speaking to ANI, Saikia made it crystal clear that there's been absolutely no move to replace Gambhir. He called the reports "totally incorrect" and "purely speculative," adding that they're "someone's figment of imagination" with "no truth" to them whatsoever.
Even the supposed approach to Laxman has been shot down, too. A senior BCCI official stated that the board hasn't spoken to VVS Laxman "either officially or unofficially." Laxman, who currently serves as the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, was reportedly happy with his current role anyway. But according to the BCCI, that conversation never even happened.
For now, Gambhir has the full backing of the board. His contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup, and the BCCI seems intent on honouring that commitment.
Why the Rumours Hold Weight
In truth, you can understand why people believed these reports in the first place. India's Test form under Gambhir has been nothing short of disastrous.
It started with the New Zealand series in October 2024, when India suffered a humiliating 3-0 whitewash at home. This was the first time India had been swept in a home Test series in their 90-year cricket history.
The Men in Blue were bundled out for just 46 runs in the first innings at Bengaluru, their lowest-ever home Test score. The fortress that was India's home crumbled spectacularly, ending a 12-year unbeaten streak on home soil.
Then came South Africa in November 2025, and somehow it got worse. Another whitewash, ending 0-2 this time. It marked South Africa's first Test series win in India in 25 years.
Since Gambhir took charge in July 2024, India has won just 7 Tests while losing 10. The once-dominant home record has been torn apart, and it's cost them dearly in the World Test Championship standings. With numbers like that, it’s not surprising that replacement rumours started spreading.
From Test to T20 World Cup
While his Test record is underwhelming, Gambhir’s white-ball credentials remain impressive. India won the 2025 Champions Trophy and the T20 Asia Cup under his watch, going unbeaten in both tournaments. That kind of success buys you time, and time is exactly what Gambhir needs, because the 2026 T20 World Cup is just around the corner.
The tournament kicks off on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and India will defend their 2024 title on home soil. They'll open their campaign against the USA at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.
The preparation is already underway. India will host New Zealand for a five-match T20I series in January, giving them a final tune-up before the main event. With familiar faces like Suryakumar Yadav leading the side and Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav in the squad, the pieces are in place for a title defence.
Although the BCCI has publicly backed Gambhir, reports suggest his contract could be "revisited" depending on India's performance in this World Cup. A successful title defence would silence the critics and cement his position. However, anything less, and those replacement rumours might just become reality.
For now, Gambhir remains India's man. But the T20 World Cup will ultimately decide whether he stays that way.
