Football: Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria?

Adarabioyo mulling Super Eagles switch ahead of World Cup
The 2025-26 football season is not just a massive one for lovers of European leagues like the Premier League or La Liga; it is also set to be one of major interest for international football fans, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup now on the horizon.
As is the case in most World Cup years, players are more amped up than ever to perform at their highest level in the hope of earning a coveted spot in their national team, ready to step out on the grandest stage of them all.
Over the years, players (or their parents) who have attempted without luck to earn call-ups from their current nation of residence have opted to return to their African routes, with Nigeria being one of the most popular destinations, given its massive population.
Some of the most notable players to have chosen to switch allegiance back to the Super Eagles include Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, Nottingham Forrest defender Ola Aina, and another high-profile name that could join the list is Tosin Adarabioyo.
Adarabioyo had a breakout season with Chelsea in 2024-25, making 22 Premier League appearances in central defence, though he also chipped in with a goal and an assist. However, despite his form and having represented England at the U16 and U19 levels, he has yet to be called up to the national side.
The 27-year-old made his first trip to Nigeria during the summer break and is believed to be weighing up the possibility of trading in the dream of playing for the Three Lions in order to potentially feature for the Super Eagles at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Injury setback to delay Adarabioyo Super Eagles decision?

After winning last season's Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup in the US this summer, expectations for Chelsea this season are exceptionally high, with many expecting the West Londoners to challenge for the Premier League title.
However, the Blues made an underwhelming start to their top-flight campaign last week, playing out a goalless draw at home against London rivals Crystal Palace. Notably, Adarabioyo was not a part of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the match.
The central defender sustained an injury in training the day before the season opener, which proved to be a major blow for the Blues, given that his defensive partner, Levi Colwill, had also been ruled out on short notice in the lead-up to the match. Discussing the injury, Maresca said:
“There is a small injury, he needs some days off, then we will see for the next game.”
It remains to be seen if Adarabioyo will be able to shake off his knock before Friday, when Chelsea travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham United in the Premier League matchday two opener.
