Cricket: India announce squad for Australia ODI series - Shubman Gill appointed captain, five big names miss out

India team selection for Australia tour raises eyebrows
Fresh off their 2025 Asia Cup triumph and a commanding victory over the West Indies in the first of two Tests over the past weekend, India are already looking ahead to their next assignment, where they will head Down Under to face Australia later this month.
The Men in Blue are scheduled to take on the Aussies in three ODIs between October 19 and 25 and five T20Is starting on October 29. We will be covering all of the fixtures in our cricket predictions, so be sure to check them out ahead of the first match.
India’s senior men’s selection panel have already announced the squads for the tour, and it is fair to say that their decisions have raised a few eyebrows, especially around captaincy and a handful of notable exclusions.
For the upcoming tour of Australia, Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as the team’s 50-over captain. Sharma is part of the team, as is fellow veteran Virat Kohli, but both have been overlooked to lead the Men in Blue Down Under.
The major area of discussion comes from the players who have not made the cut, two of which are understandable in Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant, as both players are currently nursing injuries.
Beyond Pandya and Pant, the headline omissions are those of Varun Chakaravarthy (for ODIs), Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja, all of whom were part of the team that surged to the Champions Trophy title earlier this year.
Chakaravarthy and Jadeja’s absences are the most significant, given their form recently. Jadeja was one of India’s standout all-rounders at the Champions Trophy, while Chakaravarthy was recently announced as the number-one T20I bowler in the world.

Australia were handed a massive boost for the upcoming ODI series, with Mitchell Starc set to make his return to the 50-over squad. Matthew Renshaw has also earned a call-up and could make his ODI debut for the Baggy Greens this month.
