Akash Choudhary produced a performance for the ages this week as he etched his name in the history books by scoring the fastest half-century in first-class cricket. It took the 25-year-old just 11 deliveries to bring up his fifty for Meghalaya, surpassing Leicestershire’s Wayne White’s previous record.

Choudhary lights up 2025 Ranji Trophy with blistering knock

A week ago, Akash Choudhary was a player who very few cricket fans across the globe had heard of, but that changed on Sunday morning when the all-rounder delivered a historic knock for Meghalaya in the 2025 Ranji Trophy.

His side had already got off to a stunning start in their match against Arunachal Pradesh, with captain Kishan Lyngdoh and Rahul Dalal both scoring centuries, while opener Arpit Bhatewara smashed a double-century in just 273 deliveries.

However, Choudhary grabbed the headlines later in the innings by bringing up his half-century in a mere 11 deliveries, which included eight consecutive sixes to join only Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri for blasting six sixes in an over in first-class cricket.

With that knock, the 25-year-old surpassed the previous record held by Leicestershire’s Wayne White (12 balls) for the fastest fifty in first-class cricket. Speaking to the media after the incredible feat, Choudhary said:

“I'm feeling great obviously. Happy for my family, my state “Meghalaya” and all of those who have been there in my journey as a cricketer. It’s (becoming an overnight sensation) unreal for me and it’s a special feeling definitely but at the same time not thinking much about it.”

When asked about his hopes of featuring in the 2026 Indian Premier League, the all-rounder admitted that it would be a dream come true, and added that he would be honoured to play for any team in the competition next year.

Choudhary has played 31 first-class matches for Meghalaya to date, scoring 503 runs at an average of 14.37, and he has also taken 87 wickets at an average of 29.97.
