In truth, there wasn’t a great deal wrong with the way the Turks went about their business against the Aussies. They were proactive, they moved the ball well, they tried to force the issue, and they did carve out openings. Really, their defeat was a mixture of poor finishing and bad luck. They could easily make amends here if delivering a similar effort.

In contrast, there weren’t many positives to be taken out of Paraguay’s defeat against the US. They didn’t defend well, they weren’t hard to play around, and they offered very little offensively. For large parts of the game, the South Americans gave the impression that they didn’t want to be there in Los Angeles. If they’re going to get anything here, they’ll need to sharpen up in terms of mentality, that’s for sure.

Turkey head coach Vincenzo Montella probably won’t mix it up too much, despite losing that first game. As suggested above, the Crescent Stars didn’t play badly, so there’s no need to panic and rip up the entire playbook. One player who may have forced his way into the starting XI with a decent performance as a half-time substitute is Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz. Cenk Uzun would also provide an offensive boost, so he too could feature.
