The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially begun, and Group J will continue with its first games on Wednesday, June 17th, with a matchup between Austria and Jordan at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Let's take a look at the match statistics and predictions for this matchup between Austria and Jordan.
Thanks to the expanded World Cup this year, Jordan will make its first-ever appearance. They qualified by finishing in second place in Group B of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), with 16 points and a record of 4-4-2 only sitting behind South Korea.
As for Austria, they will be making their eighth appearance at the World Cup all-time. Austria reached the World Cup by finishing in first place in Group H of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) qualifications, ending with 19 points and a record of 6-1-1.
On paper, Austria certainly looks to be the stronger team, with more World Cup experience and a harder path to qualification. That being said, Jordan could be a pesky team to deal with, especially considering that they have never competed on this big a stage.

Austria - Jordan: Form Analysis
For Jordan, their run-up to the World Cup has not been particularly impressive. Jordan has failed to win his last four games (all friends).
They drew 2-2 with Costa Rica on March 27th, drew with Nigeria 2-2 on March 31st, lost to Switzerland 4-1 on May 31st, and lost to Colombia 2-0 on June 7th.
Their last win as a team was on June 5th of 2025, when they beat Oman 3-0 in World Cup qualifying.
“Austria allowed just one goal in their three World Cup tune-up games.”
Austria enters the World Cup in much more promising form, to say the least. They have not lost in their last five matches, going 4-1-0 during that stretch.
This includes a 5-1 win against Ghana on March 27th, a 1-0 win against South Korea on March 31st, and a 1-0 win against Tunisia on June 1st. Austria was also scheduled to play Guatemala in a final World Cup tune-up, but this game was canceled.

Austria & Jordan Squad Analysis
Jordan is not the most prolific scoring team, so their goals tend to be more spread out. In recent friends, Jordan has had five different goal scorers. This includes Baha' Faisal and Ibrahim Sabra against Costa Rica, Mousa Al-Tamari and Mohammad Al-Daoud vs Nigeria, and Odeh Fakhoury vs Switzerland.
Additionally, the majority of the players on Jordan's current World Cup roster do not play for big-name European Clubs, with many playing in leagues based in Asia.
“Marcel Sabitzer has scored 26 career goals for Austria in 98 appearances, and this will be his first World Cup.”
Austria's squad has plenty of talent at this year's rendition of the World Cup.
One of their top goal scorers is Marcel Sabitzer (Borussia Dortmund). In the last three international games alone, Sabitzer has scored three goals for his country.
Another well-known player for Austria is David Alaba (Real Madrid), who is a veteran and a great addition to their defense.

Our Austria vs Jordan Prediction
Austria is the heavy favorite in this game; however, they still look to be the best betting option. As mentioned, Austria has shown great form leading up to the World Cup, with four wins in their last five games and three wins in a row.
Jordan, on the other hand, has never played on a stage as big as the World Cup. Further, they have lost two games in a row leading up to the World Cup and were outscored 6-1 in these games.
Therefore, given the clear discrepancy in form between these two countries, our Austria vs Jordan prediction is: Austria ML.
Austria vs Jordan - Other Interesting Picks
Over 2.5 Total Goals
Our second pick for this game will look at the over. Jordan, in particular, has shown poor defense as of late, allowing 10 goals over their last four games. As a result of this, the over is 3-1 over this stretch.
As for Austria, they have shown more defensive strength recently, allowing just one goal over their last three games. They have, however, scored a fair amount of goals in these warm-up games, with seven over three games.
The total is likely to be carried by Austria's attacking ability, but Jordan could very well find at least one, which would be their first-ever goal at a World Cup. Because of this, backing Over 2.5 Total Goals will be our play.
Marcel Sabitzer Anytime Goalscorer
Our third pick for this game will be for Marcel Sabitzer, from Austria, to score a goal at any time.
Sabitzer did not have the greatest club season with Borussia Dortmund, scoring just once in 21 starts. That said, he consistently has been able to step up for Austria during international play.
Sabitzer has scored a total of 26 goals for Austria in 98 career appearances. This includes three goals in the last three games, one in each game against Ghana, South Korea, and Tunisia.
Therefore, given that Sabitzer has proven to find another level when playing for his country, backing Sabitzer to score in Austria's opening game will be our play.
