Following what wasn’t the worst opening-game result, the Bosnians will be looking to step on the gas a little on Thursday, when they take on a Switzerland team that failed to meet expectations during the first round of group games. The pair will clash in Los Angeles.
Very few people expected the Swiss to fall short against a Qatari team that had never previously picked up a World Cup point, but that’s exactly what happened, with Murat Yakin’s men wasting many chances, before seeing their first-half lead eroded late in the day. The Bosnian’s also picked up a point, tying 1-1 with tournament co-hosts Canada.
We shouldn’t rush to dismiss the Swiss. Sure, that opening result was disappointing, but it’s not as if they didn’t create lots, so much so that they can be expected to make amends against a Bosnia team that gave lots away against Canada. In other words, bet on the Swiss win.

Switzerland - Bosnia Herzegovina: Form Analysis
Did the Swiss play poorly last time out? No, they didn’t. It was never going to be easy facing a team only looking to defend and make life difficult in the Californian heat, but the Swiss dominated, created plenty and could easily have been four goals to the good by the time they conceded that stoppage-time equalizer. They will need to be less wasteful, sure, but nothing about their opening-round efforts suggests that they’ll struggle to dominate a Bosnian team that fights hard but is ultimately limited offensively.

Written off by many during the qualification play-offs, the Bosnians have made a name for themselves as a team that can upset the odds, a team that can defy expectations and a team that is far from easy to face. Despite being under the pressure against Canada in their first group game, Sergej Barbarez’s men opened the scoring midway through the first half, and they held on until late in the game. They certainly rode their luck at times, but they’re happy to defend and can be a threat both on the break, and from set pieces.

Switzerland & Bosnia Herzegovina Squad Analysis
Murat Yakin may be keen to freshen things up for the Swiss. The lively Johan Manzambi, who enjoyed a fine domestic season with Freiburg, is one of the most likely to come into the starting XI, probably in place of the more pragmatic Remo Freuler. Otherwise, the starting XI will be much the same as it was last time out, with one other possible change being Zeki Amdouni for Ruben Vargas.

Having seen his team dig deep and fight for the entirety of the contest in Toronto, Sergej Barbarez won’t be looking to make several changes. Edin Dzeko, who is arguably the greatest Bosnian footballer of all time, wasn’t used during the first game, but he is expected to be fit enough to feature here, perhaps even from the start. If Dzeko does start, it could be at the expense of Jovan Lukic, who scored Bosnia’s goal last time out. Young defender Nidal Celik is likely to remain out with a knock.

Our Switzerland vs Bosnia Herzegovina Prediction
The bottom line here is that, although they missed some big chances last time out, when push comes to shove, the Swiss simply have more firepower up top, and that’s not easy to ignore. If the Bosnians allow their opponents to attack as much as they did against Canada, then they’ll likely come unstuck.
Now fired up and determined to get all three points, the Swiss will be happy to go toe-to-toe with their opponents in Los Angeles, and as a result, they should overpower them. At the very least, the team ranked 19th in the world looks to have a slightly better chance of outsourcing the team ranked 64th than the early odds indicate.
