Uruguay and Saudi Arabia shared a group in the 2018 World Cup, and they will do so again in 2026. As always, Uruguay arrives at the biggest football tournament as a difficult opponent to play against, proudly displaying four stars above their crest on their sky-blue jersey. After a respectable World Cup qualifying campaign, they want to start off on the right foot against the Saudi team.
The Saudis, for their part, have qualified for their seventh World Cup. Inevitably, everyone remembers the Saudi Arabian national team for the scare they gave Argentina, the eventual world champions, when they defeated them. However, that meant little for the Asian team, as it wasn't enough to advance from the group stage, where they were eliminated in 2006, 2018, and 2022.
Bielsa will manage the Uruguayan national team after having coached Argentina in 2002 and Chile in 2010 in the World Cups. This version of Uruguay is a team that has already turned the page on one of the most productive generations in the country's football history. The old trio of Cavani, Suárez, and Godín has been replaced by a new, talented generation led by Valverde, the Real Madrid player, and others like Darwin Núñez and Ugarte.

Saudi Arabia - Uruguay: Form Analysis
Name for name, the Uruguayan team looks stronger than the Saudi Arabian one, but Uruguay arrives at the tournament in inconsistent form, while Saudi Arabia qualified for the World Cup very deservedly, sending Iraq to the playoffs. They were invited to the last Gold Cup, where they reached the quarterfinals, and they were also semifinalists in the Arab Cup last year.
Saudi Arabia finished with positive feelings after their last preparatory friendly in Texas against Senegal, one of the toughest teams in Africa. It was a goalless draw where the Saudis even looked superior at times, so much so that Al-Dawsari almost took the lead.
Uruguay defends well, but lacks goals.
The Uruguayan national team achieved great things in the first part of the South American qualifiers; they even beat Colombia and went undefeated in two matches against Brazil. But since September 6, 2024, Uruguay has drawn seven 0-0 matches in friendlies and qualifiers.
Uruguay faced four comparable teams in the lead-up to the World Cup: a draw against Mexico, an unexpected 5-1 defeat to the USA, a better performance with a 1-1 draw against England in London, and a goalless draw against Algeria in Turin.

Saudi Arabia & Uruguay Squad Analysis
Among Uruguayan media, there is a consensus that the country's best player is Federico Valverde. In fact, some consider him among the best midfielders in the world today, and he arrives at this World Cup at his peak as a footballer. After a couple of trophyless seasons with Real Madrid, he wants to make his mark at this World Cup and assume a leadership role.
Of course, there's also Darwin Núñez, the worthy successor to Luis Suárez, who is looking to finally deliver a memorable performance at the tournament. Ronald Araujo, as he is at Barcelona, is expected to be a leader and solidify Uruguay's already formidable defense. However, there are doubts about whether he'll be physically fit for the World Cup. Bielsa gave a terse answer about him, saying, "We'll see in time."
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Greek coach, Donis, has cleverly assembled a squad composed almost entirely of players from the Saudi Pro League. This is more than positive in terms of team cohesion. Musab Al-Juwayr is perhaps the most exciting prospect in Saudi football, Kanno is the well-known engine of the midfield, and there will be another World Cup for the country's legend, Salem Al-Dawsari.

Our Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay Prediction
Uruguay arrives with a squad that includes several players who have consistently been prominent figures in European club football over the last three years. That alone should be enough to at least make them look better on the pitch than the Saudis, but the South American team's lack of goals is also noticeable.
Furthermore, in the months leading up to the World Cup, an off-field controversy arose between coach Bielsa and national team legend Suárez. The South American team enters its debut with some uncertainty, but its defense will remain solid. The midfield, which brings together many players, will take the ball away from the Saudis.
Our prediction for Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay is: Under 2.5 goals.
