Following their opening-game win against a lacklustre South Africa team, tournament co-hosts Mexico will be hoping to double their points tally and book safe passage to the knockouts early on Thursday. This time, they’ll take on the South Koreans.
It was a happy homecoming for the Mexicans, who opened the World Cup show with a dominant performance in front of an expectant home crowd at Azteca Stadium, winning by two goals to zero. For South Korea, there was no clean sheet, but Hong Myung-bo’s men played some hugely promising soccer, getting the job done, despite finding themselves a goal down with 30 minutes to play.
Looking at what both teams did during the first round of games, ‘Both Teams to Score’ catches the eye at a generous-looking price of +115. Both teams can create chances, while both teams gave the impression that they could be cut through rather easily.

Mexico - Korea Republic: Form Analysis
The Mexicans got the job done without ever coming under any pressure on opening night, though we shouldn’t get too carried away. Their opponents were awful, rolling over for El Tri, who struggled at times to up the intensity. An improved performance will be required if they’re to get the better of a South Korean team that enjoyed themselves during the first round of games, especially creatively. If Javier Aguirre’s men are to make it two wins from two, they’ll need to play quicker, while they’ll also need to be less wasteful in the final third.

The South Koreans could also do with sharpening up in the final third. Against Czechia, they played with a serious intensity, moving the ball both speedily and smartly, creating some wonderful openings thanks to a series of clever combination plays. Unfortunately, although they did score two well-worked goals, all too often, their attacks broke down thanks to a lack of end-product. They have the quality to not only match but cause Mexico some serious problems, and if they can be more clinical, they could upset the co-hosts.

Mexico & Korea Republic Squad Analysis
Mexico boss Javier Aguirre would probably have liked to have stuck to the same starting XI, but a late red card for central defender and captain Cesar Montes means that the co-hosts will need to make at least one change. Edson Alvarez is the most likely player to come in for the suspended skipper. Otherwise, we could see an unchanged side for Mexico, with Raul Jimenez, who scored his first ever World Cup goal against South Africa, once again leading the line for El Tri.

The team that started the first game for South Korea played very well, especially early on, and off the back of that effort, Hong Myung-bo isn’t expected to change a great deal. It may be hard to avoid bringing in Hyeon-Gyu Oh, who was expected to start the first game, instead coming on as a sub, scoring the winner. He could replace Lee Jae-Sung.

Our Mexico vs Korea Republic Prediction
This will be a game between two confident teams, and there's no reason why both won't look to get on the front foot, so those in attendance in Zapopan should witness a decent game. At the very least, the intensity will be much higher than in Mexico's first game. We've already seen both teams create plenty, and given that the South Koreans looked quite open at the back, at least one goal at either end looks a little more likely than early odds of +115 may have us believe. Such odds could (and likely will) shorten before this one kicks off, so get in early.
