On Sunday evening, in the Mexican city of Monterrey, the team that finished third at the 1994 World Cup will be in action. That’s right, it’s time for the Swedes to begin their 2026 journey, and that journey will start with a game against Tunisia.
Sweden is not one of the countries that boasts a previous World Cup win, but the Scandinavian nation has performed well at several previous tournaments, finishing third twice and runners-up once. This is the first time that they’ve qualified since 2018, though, and they’ll be keen to impress. The Tunisians have featured at each of the last two World Cups, but they failed to make it out of the groups in both 2018 and 2022. Can they do better this time around?
If we look at the early lines, the Swedes likely have a better chance of making the most of this relatively straightforward opening task than a price of -115 suggests. In other words, it’s worth betting on a Sweden victory.

Sweden - Tunisia: Form Analysis
The Swedes don’t exactly come into this World Cup in red-hot form, having tied against a Greek team that didn’t qualify last time out, while they struggled to match the quality of fellow Scandinavian nation Norway prior to that, losing by three goals to one. Importantly, they are scoring regular goals, though, which is more than can be said for their opponents, and as they’ve notched nine in their four games since March, they should take to the field feeling confident.
Importantly, they are scoring regular goals, though, which is more than can be said for their opponents, and as they’ve notched nine in their four games since March, they should take to the field feeling confident.
The Tunisians are in dreadful scoring form, there can be no denying that. They’re also in poor form in general, losing their most recent warm-up game by five goals to zero against the Red Devils of Belgium. Prior to that, they didn’t quite collapse defensively, but they still tasted defeat, without scoring, losing by a goal to zero against the Austrians. They’ve won just one of their last seven games, scoring only one goal in their last four, displaying some of the worst build-up form of all the teams that we’re about to see play at the 2026 World Cup.

Sweden & Tunisia Squad Analysis
If Graham Potter decides to line the Swedes up in a 4-4-2 formation, then he’s going to have a very strong front two of Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak, both of whom started the final warm-up game. Lucas Bergvall didn’t start against Greece, but is expected to come back into the midfield, while Anthony Elanga is a likely starter too. Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren, who scored 16 goals in the Scottish Premiership last season, could start in an offensive midfield role.
If Lamouchi is looking for more experience at the back, then he could recall Nice defender Ali Abdi, who was rested against Belgium having played 90 minutes against Austria.
Will Tunisian head coach Sabri Lamouchi switch things up after that Belgian defeat? Well, it’s certainly possible, and he’ll need to do something, though most of what he’s tried in recent times has failed. If Lamouchi is looking for more experience at the back, then he could recall Nice defender Ali Abdi, who was rested against Belgium having played 90 minutes against Austria.

Our Sweden vs Tunisia Prediction
This really could come down to the rather glaringly obvious fact that the Swedes possess an awful lot more offensive power than the Tunisians, who really are struggling for goals. Not only do the North Africans find it tough to both create and score, but they showed a lack of defensive solidity against both Austria and Belgium, performing as if they'd find it all too tough against a high-scoring Sweden team that has stacks of forward quality.
