The world champions get their tournament underway on Tuesday evening, when they’ll take on Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Can the men who won the 2022 World Cup make a winning start to life in Group J?
After conquering world football just under four years ago, the Argentines will be looking to become the first nation to win back-to-back World Cups since 1962. The Algerians, on the other hand, will be searching for just a second foray into the knockout rounds, having reached the Round-of-16 back in 2014.
Looking at the betting lines ahead of this fixture, ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ appeals most. La Selección won’t be looking to go crazy in this first fixture, while the Fennec Foxes don’t typically open up and give much away in the biggest games, so a relatively low-scoring game is the way to go.

Argentina - Algeria: Form Analysis
Argentina’s pre-tournament form has been nothing short of red-hot. The world champions suffered a surprising defeat against a defiant Ecuador team back in November, but they’ve since won seven straight, scoring plenty of goals and conceding very few. In 2026, they’ve won four out of four, most recently beating Honduras 2-0, before beating Iceland 3-0 last time out. We should see a confident Argentinian team take to the field in Kansas City.
We should see a confident Argentinian team take to the field in Kansas City.
The Algerians should also be confident ahead of this match. They’ve not lost since exiting AFCON against Nigeria back in early January, winning three out of four games since that tournament defeat. Back in March, they showed lots of resilience and fighting spirit against Uruguay, tying 0-0, while they’ve since beat both the Netherlands and Bolivia without conceding. Such form bodes well ahead of what is a big test for the Fennec Foxes.

Argentina & Algeria Squad Analysis
Given that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the way Argentina played in that final warm-up game, head coach Lionel Scaloni may be tempted to stick rather than twist, though that would mean leaving Lionel Messi on the bench. We all know that isn’t going to happen. Cristian Romero made a surprise recovery in time to feature as a sub last time out, though risking him from the start here may not be wise. Alexis Mac Allister is another player likely to return to the starting XI, perhaps at the expense of Giovanni Lo Celso.
Algeria delivered a swift and uncompromising display to beat Bolivia last time out, and off the back of that, there may not be too many changes from Vladimir Petkovic
Algeria delivered a swift and uncompromising display to beat Bolivia last time out, and off the back of that, there may not be too many changes from Vladimir Petkovic, who is expected to start both Mohamed Amoura and Aiser Mandi after that duo combined for a pleasing goal last time out. The creative Fares Chaibi is likely to come back in, while one other change could see Amine Gouiri, who scored twice off the bench against Bolivia, come in from the start.

Our Argentina vs Algeria Prediction
Whilst we are talking about the world number one, don’t be too surprised to see a less intense game here. La Selección may have been netting plenty of goals, but they’ve had a run of facing nations of much lesser quality. Likewise, Algeria recently played a very relevant team, Netherlands, in which they looked to just sit back, and succeeded in nabbing the 0-1 win. They also played Uruguay in the game prior, which concluded goalless, without many shots at all.
On the topic of goal attempts, the Argentines are also very efficient in frustrating the opposition and giving away very few chances. With two teams doing as excellent defensively as the two at hand are, and given the fact that neither will be looking to come out into the tournament full-power, the early odds shouldn’t be as generous for under 2.5 goals.
Our Argentina vs Algeria Pick: Under 2.5 Goals.
