The Garden State started it all with legalized sports betting outside Nevada in May 2018. New Jersey was long known as the East Coast’s answer to Las Vegas, but sports betting opened up when the state got the Supreme Court to allow legal sports bets to any state that wanted to offer it.

Today, sports bettors in New Jersey have plenty of options to bet on the Devils, the Giants, the Jets and more with a wide variety of sportsbooks on the market.

Rules for sports betting in New Jersey

New Jersey is one of the best states for sports bettors because of the number of sportsbooks available in the state. With 17 legal sportsbooks in the Garden State, bettors will have access to several generous welcome bonuses, promotions and some of the most competitive odds in the industry.

New Jersey has been a leader in sports betting ever since it passed a bill making in-state sports wagering legal in 2012 and took the case to the Supreme Court, opening the floodgates for legal sports betting nationwide.

As in most states, you have to be at least 21 years old to wager in New Jersey, and you must physically be located in the state to place a legal wager. Other rules and regulations can vary depending on the sportsbook you choose.

One of the few drawbacks to betting in New Jersey is that the state does not allow bets on any game involving a New Jersey-based college team. That means bets on Rutgers, Seton Hall, Princeton and others are strictly prohibited at all times.

You also cannot bet on any college game that takes place in the state, regardless of the teams playing. When the NCAA tournament comes to New Jersey, as it has before at the Prudential Center, none of the games held there will be offered for action. As in other states, betting on political events is also not permitted.

Pop sports betting in New Jersey

With two major markets surrounding New Jersey and four professional teams playing their games in the Garden State, professional sports betting is very popular across the state.

Football Betting in New Jersey

Football is the most popular sport to bet in the United States, and New Jersey is no exception to that. Fans will have plenty of options to bet on touchdown scorers, totals, spread bets and Super Bowl futures.

NFL Betting New Jersey

With the New York Giants and New York Jets both playing in New Jersey and the Philadelphia Eagles on the other side of the Delaware, there’s a lot of passion and a lot of wagers from NFL fans in the state.

All three teams have sportsbook partners, with the Giants linking up with DraftKings, the Jets pairing with BetMGM and the Eagles partnering with UniBet. Between the Eagles’ recent success, the Giants’ proud history and the Jets’ ability to garner headlines, NFL excitement is never far away.

Basketball Betting in New Jersey

Basketball betting is popular because of individual prop plays, such as first basket scored, total rebounds and whether a player will record a double-double. Spreads and totals are also great options for betting hoops.

NBA Betting New Jersey

Basketball is still quite popular in New Jersey, even with the Nets’ 2012 move across the Upper Bay to Brooklyn. In addition to the formerly New Jersey Nets, the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers both command loyal followings in the Garden State.

All three teams offer a sportsbook partnership, with the Knicks offering Caesars Sportsbook at Madison Square Garden, the Sixers partnering with BetMGM and the Nets building a relationship with Betway. All three teams believe they’re close to ending their title droughts, making this a great time to bet on the NBA in New Jersey.

Baseball Betting in New Jersey

Baseball offers 162 chances during spring and summer to place bets on game outcomes, individual prop plays and World Series winners. As one of the most stat-heavy sports, baseball naturally lends itself to betting.

MLB Betting New Jersey

New Jersey fans gravitate to the three teams that sit a river away: the New York Yankees, New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

The Yankees have long been baseball’s gold standard for success with 27 World Series titles, while the National League rivalry between the Mets and Phillies reaches its most intense in the battleground area of New Jersey.

The Yankees partner with FanDuel, while the Mets have a partnership with Caesars. The Phillies don’t yet have a sportsbook partner, but they remain a popular betting option.

Hockey Betting in New Jersey

Hockey is fully available for bets in the Garden State, whether that’s on individual games, season-long awards or the Stanley Cup.

NHL Betting New Jersey

As the only team in the state that names itself “New Jersey” and winners of three Stanley Cups since 1995, the New Jersey Devils have earned a loyal following in the Garden State.

Other popular teams in the state include the Devils’ fiercest rivals, the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers. The Devils have an established partnership with Betway, while the Rangers partner with Caesars and the Flyers are paired with BetRivers.

Soccer Betting in New Jersey

Soccer has been popular in New Jersey since the days of the New York Cosmos in the 1980s. One professional team calls the Garden State its home, while two more play just across the river from New Jersey.

Even though soccer is lower-scoring, bets on both teams to score, corner bets and the lucrative correct score play are all popular betting options.

MLS Betting New Jersey

Northern New Jersey hosts the New York Red Bulls, while southern New Jersey tends to support the Philadelphia Union. Additionally, New Jersey will serve as one of the hosts for the 2026 World Cup.

The Union have partnered with Parx Sportsbook, while the Red Bulls don’t yet have a sportsbook partner but have paired up with the New Jersey Lottery.

College Teams in New Jersey

Rutgers and Seton Hall both have loyal followings, and Saint Peter’s, Princeton and Fairleigh Dickinson have made New Jersey the home state of Cinderella with their recent NCAA tournament runs.

But none of that matters for sports bettors in New Jersey; wagers on college sports involving New Jersey-based teams are strictly prohibited.
