Kicking off as the eighth game at the 2026 World Cup, the second on Canadian shores, is a clash between Australia and Turkey, which will get underway at BC Place in Vancouver.
The Australians have been a constant presence at the FIFA World Cup since ending their 32-year hiatus back in 2006, and they come into this tournament having reached the knockouts back in 2022. Can they do better than the Round-of-16 this time around?
For the Turks, well, World Cup appearances have been few and far between. This will be the first time that they’ve featured on soccer’s biggest stage since 2002, when they surprisingly reached the semi-finals.
Based on what we’ve seen from these two in recent times, a Turkish win seems the most likely outcome, though the Australians aren’t in the habit of getting rolled over, which means that Vincenzo Montella’s men may need to take the low-scoring route. ‘Turkey to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ looks the smartest move betting wise.

Australia - Turkiye: Form Analysis
For Australia, the warm-up period consisted of games against Mexico and Switzerland, and it’s fair to say that Tony Popovic’s men were put through their paces by two teams that could go far this summer. Against the Mexicans, the Aussies were a little slow out of the gate, but they defended stoutly, as they always have done under Popovic, taking their familiar rigid, back-foot approach, which meant that they conceded just one goal. They also conceded just once against the Swiss, once again containing their opponents for large parts of the contest. The problem is that they create very little offensively, which means they’ll likely struggle for goals over the next few weeks.
Having scored six goals in their last two, winning each of their last four, the Crescent Stars should take to the field at BC Place feeling very confident.
The Turks have not been struggling for goals, not at all. After fighting hard to get through the play-offs, Montella’s men have stepped on the gas, first hammering in four against North Macedonia, before smashing in another couple against Venezuela in their second warm-up contest. Having scored six goals in their last two, winning each of their last four, the Crescent Stars should take to the field at BC Place feeling very confident.

Australia & Turkiye Squad Analysis
Aussie boss Tony Popovic went for something of an experimental starting XI against Switzerland, leaving the likes of Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe on the bench, though that midfield duo should return to the starting XI in Vancouver, where Mohamed Toure, who ended the domestic campaign in hot scoring form, is expected to return as the starting striker. Tete Yengi, who has played very little soccer in recent times, was a surprise starter last time out, and after scoring, the Machida Zelvia man should feature here, but it may be as a sub.

The striker position is going to be an interesting one for the Turks, who have several options in that sense. Porto’s Deniz Gul started up top in the two warm-up games and looks the most likely starter here. Arder Guler and Baris Yilmaz both came into the starting XI against Venezuela and are both expected to start here, while the hugely experienced and wonderfully gifted Hakan Calhanoglu will be back in midfield.
Australia - Turkiye Key Points
- Four of Turkey's last five wins came in games containing less than four goals.
- Just three goals were scored across Australia's two warm-up games.
- If we exclude their games against minnows Curacao, the Aussies have scored one or none in each of their last eight games.
- Less than four goals have been scored in seven of Australia's last eight games.

Our Australia vs Turkiye Prediction
We know that the Socceroos can dig deep, we saw that at the last World Cup, but if we look at their recent efforts, then you really do have to wonder where the goals are going to come from. Not many teams will give Tony Popovic's men a hammering, but if they're patient, the Turks have the creativity, through top players such as Arder Guler and Hakan Calhanoglu, to break the Aussies down.
Opting for a relatively low-scoring Turkey win is far from the worst option, especially at odds of +130.
Our Australia vs Turkey Pick: Turkey to Win & Under 3.5 Goals.
Australia vs Turkiye - Other Interesting Picks
Turkey to Win
Can Uzun to Score
The current Turkish team is blessed with several promising forwards, but Can Uzun is up there with the most useful. The 20-year-old enters this game having scored against North Macedonia recently, and he’s definitely the type who can pick the lock against deep-lying opponents, scoring in three of his last five for club and country. Odds of +300 look a little too large to ignore.
