The Swiss national team deserves recognition for its consistency, as it will appear in its sixth consecutive World Cup; on four previous occasions, it has reached the Round of 16 without much difficulty. The group the Swiss will be in this edition seems particularly manageable, and in fact, they are the pre-tournament favorites to top Group B with odds of -125. On June 13th, at the colossal Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, they will have to start proving it against Qatar.
Meanwhile, this Qatari team is managed by former Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui. In 2022, Qatar became the only host nation in World Cup history to lose all of its matches. Therefore, qualifying for this World Cup on sporting merit represents one of the team's most remarkable achievements. Qatar seems accustomed to great feats, like winning the Asian Cup in 2019 and 2023, but also to lackluster performances, such as finishing last in their group in the Gulf Cup and the Arab Cup.
Between Switzerland and Qatar, it's clear that experience favors the Europeans, as the generation led by Xhaka, Akanji, and Rodríguez seems to have enough left in the tank to deliver another solid World Cup. Furthermore, Rodríguez endorsed Murat Yakin's leadership, saying he is doing "a good job."

Qatar - Switzerland: Form Analysis
In 2024, the Swiss national team suffered a collapse in the Nations League, ultimately being relegated, but that setback seems to have been put behind them by an immediate recovery. In 2025, Switzerland cruised through the United States. Yakin's team scored four goals against both Mexico and the United States, the two hosts of that World Cup. That same year, the Swiss had a strong World Cup qualifying campaign and also scored four goals against Sweden.
On the eve of the World Cup, Switzerland had no trouble scoring four goals against Jordan once again. Finally, they drew 1-1 in their last warm-up match against Australia. Itten's header grazed the post. Had it not, it would have been a victory.
As for Qatar, this is a team for whom simply advancing from the group stage would be enough; Lopetegui himself encouraged his players to enjoy this World Cup without the pressure of the previous one. However, they arrive at the match in California in worrying form: without a win in their last six matches and they couldn't even score a goal against the modest El Salvador side.

Qatar & Switzerland Squad Analysis
Veterans Xhaka and Ricardo Rodríguez will be part of the Swiss team at a World Cup for the fourth consecutive time. But this time it seems obvious that the team's main star is Dan Ndoye, the Nottingham Forest striker valued at 31.3 million in the transfer market. He seems sharper than ever in front of goal. He scored goals in both of Switzerland's friendlies.
Yakin also gave Gregor Kobel some playing time in goal before the points count. Kobel is expected to be Switzerland's starting goalkeeper after a splendid season with Borussia Dortmund. Many analysts believe he could well be one of the most solid goalkeepers in the entire World Cup.
In the friendly against El Salvador, Lopetegui fielded practically the same starting eleven he will likely use against the Swiss. Akram Afif, the Qatari star and main playmaker, started at center forward. However, Qatar also has other interesting players, such as Pedro Miguel, the central defender who looked fit in the last friendly.
Qatar - Switzerland Key Points

- Switzerland completed 91% of their attempted passes in the previous match
- Qatar hasn't won a match since October 2025
- Qatar's defense didn't allow their opponents to complete a single one of 12 crosses in the previous friendly

Our Qatar vs Switzerland Prediction
This Swiss team is more cohesive than others due to having played together for longer periods. Tactically, there won't be any surprises from the Swiss side, but it's possible that, as happened against Jordan, Yakin will decide to use only three defenders to create more attacking impetus.
Even so, the Swiss are tactically disciplined, and what's more, lately they are more prone than ever to maintaining overwhelming possession, which they use to stifle their opponents. They had up to 69% possession against Jordan, and Qatar could very well have the same luck at Levi's Stadium.
Our prediciton for Switzerland vs Qatar is: Switzerland -1.5.
