Eastern Conference leaders Nashville SC host lowly Atlanta United on Friday night, as Major League Soccer returns following the World Cup break.
Prior to the break, Nashville had been enjoying a superb eight-game unbeaten run that had seen them leapfrog the likes of Inter Miami and Chicago to establish a two point advantage at the top of the Conference standings. Nashville's success this season has largely been due to a fantastic defensive record - they have conceded just 11 goals in their opening 14 games, which is easily the best defensive record in the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta picked up just one point from their final three MLS games before the mid-season break and are currently four points outside of the wild card places. There are still plenty of games to go, but unless HC Tata Martino can find a way to get the best out of the likes of Emmanuel Latte Lath, Paulo Diaz and Junior Alonso, it is hard to see them forcing their way into playoff contention.
