Key Factors for Champions League Quarter-Finals

The quarter finals of the 2025-26 Champions League kick-off on Tuesday. Real Madrid host Bayern Munich and Sporting visit Arsenal to get us started, followed by Liverpool’s trip to the French capital to face PSG and an all-La Liga tie at the Camp Nou.

Arsenal Under Pressure
Only a couple of weeks ago, Arsenal had legitimate quadruple aspirations. A Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City was followed by a shock FA Cup loss to Southampton on Saturday, leaving Mikel Arteta’s team chasing the Champions League and Premier League.
Arsenal have often reserved their best performances for the Champions League. They notably put in an underwhelming performance and were lucky to draw away to Bayer Leverkusen in the last round, though, and now face a highly confident Sporting team in Lisbon on Tuesday.
Sporting boast a formidable record in front of their own fans, with only one defeat since August. The Portuguese outfit came from behind to eliminate Bodø/Glimt in the last round. They have won 17 of their last 18 home matches in all competitions and have defeated PSG and Marseille at Estádio José Alvalade in this season’s Champions League.
A poor result in the first leg would reignite suggestions that Arsenal simply don’t have the mettle to get results at the business end of the season. Getting a supposedly favorable opponent only heaps pressure on Arteta’s men.
Kane’s Fitness
Despite failing to win in their last nine matches against Real Madrid, Bayern head to the Bernabeu as betting favorites. Vincent Kompany’s team dismantled Atalanta in the round of 16, and Real Madrid lost to Mallorca at the weekend.
As noted in our Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich pick, Harry Kane’s availability looms large over this tie. Bayern’s star man suffered an ankle injury on international duty and didn’t train at all last week. He returned to team training on Monday, but it remains unclear if he will be available to start on Tuesday.
Bayern are already in the highly unusual position of being favored at the Bernabeu. Their chances of a rare win in Madrid will be significantly enhanced if Kane is fit to start and play 90 minutes.
Speaking on Tuesday, Kompany said, “Even though he hasn’t been training on the pitch during this time, he’s gone through a second phase of recovery. And during this time, even though he hasn’t played, he’s trained a lot. I don’t think he’s lost his rhythm. But we’ll see what happens tomorrow. He’s here, and that’s very positive.”
Serge Gnabry filling in as Bayern’s nine – as he did in the win over Freiburg last time out – makes Bayern a much less scary opponent.
Kane has 48 goals across all competitions this term – Real’s fragile confidence will be significantly boosted if the England international isn’t fit to start.
Atletico’s Poor Away Form
On top of losing their last three matches, including a weekend defeat to Barcelona, Atletico have only won two of their last nine road matches across all competitions. Their record away to Barcelona is appalling, with no wins in their last 25 matches.

Barcelona have won eight of their last nine matches across all competitions. They have won every home match since losing to PSG on Oct. 1. It would take a remarkable turnaround in Atletico’s form to break Barca’s Camp Nou supremacy.
Liverpool’s Inconsistency
Liverpool have been a difficult team to predict all season. Results like their 4-0 drubbing of Galatasaray have been mixed with a defeat away to Brighton and a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Arne Slot’s side have lost four of their last five away matches, yet they still head to Paris with more than a puncher’s chance of getting a positive result. Our PSG vs Liverpool pick has high hopes for the London club in the French capital.
Chelsea pushed PSG hard for the first hour or so of their round of 16 tie before Luis Enrique’s side pulled away. Liverpool have the quality in midfield and the final third to make this a competitive tie, but it feels at least as likely that they are blown away by the reigning European champions.
