On Tuesday, the UEFA Champions League really starts to get serious. We’ve reached the quarter-finals, one of which sees the most successful club in UCL history take on the biggest and best that German soccer has to offer. It’s Real Madrid vs Bayern.
On paper, it looked as if Los Blancos may struggle against Man City during the previous round, but that turned out to be far from the case, with the men from the Spanish capital making light work of brushing aside Pep Guardiola’s team, winning by a comfortable five goals to one on aggregate. For Bayern, the previous round also went rather smoothly, with Vincent Kompany’s treble seekers beating Atalanta 10-2 over two legs.
A hugely interesting game awaits, and a quick look at the early market tells us that the visitors are fancied to get the job done in this first leg, despite being away from home. I’m not quite sure I can agree with that, so much so that a bet on the hosts to thrive is warranted.

I really would not be surprised if the hosts do what they do best in this game, which is outperform the odds on huge UCL nights. Many times over the last few seasons, for whatever reason, the team facing Real Madrid has been fancied, but it very rarely pans out for Los Blancos' opponents. We saw how strong the hosts can be on the break during the last round against Man City, and given that the Bayern boys will do anything other than sit back, it's very hard to see Alvaro Arbeloa's men not enjoying themselves offensively.
