USA vs Peru: Will Youth Help the USMNT Tighten Up?

Time to tighten up
Having eventually gone out of the big summer tournament with a whimper, this USA vs Peru fixture is a great opportunity for the US Men’s National Team to start their rebuild.
There can be no denying that the Stars and Stripes played with serious promise at times during the 2026 World Cup. Their opening-game effort against Paraguay was electric, while in general, they looked like a team more than capable of creating chances and scoring goals, scoring a pleasing total of 11 in five games.
However, at the opposite end of the field, Mauricio Pochettino’s men did not perform like a team that was anywhere near ready to seriously challenge for one of soccer’s biggest prizes, and that’s the issue. Prior to the tournament, there were serious questions asked of the USMNT’s ability to defend, and let’s face it, those questions were not answered positively by those tasked with operating in the defensive line during the tournament.
In five World Cup games, the US conceded eight goals. Sure, they kept clean sheets against both Australia and Bosnia, but such efforts aren’t much to shout about, not when they were all over the place against both the Turks and the Belgians. If they’re to improve during this next cycle, then they need to find ways to become tougher to breach, it really is that simple.

Poch to freshen things up personnel wise?
Compared to what we saw line-up wise at the World Cup, the starting XI in Orlando is going to be a little different. For starters, Christian Pulisic, Ricardo Pepi, Folarin Balogun, Weston McKennie and Haji Wright, for varying reasons, will not feature. This leaves the door open for fresh blood, and there’s plenty of that in the squad selected by the Argentine head coach.
In total, the squad for the friendlies due to take place over the next few weeks, contains 13 newbies, so there’s a strong chance that we’ll see a few youngsters make debuts at some point on Saturday.
Hoping to get in on the action will be Cole Campbell and Mathis Albert, both of whom are currently operating in the German Bundesliga. 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who recently became the youngest player in Major League Soccer history to score or assist in seven regular-season games, has been in hot form for the Philadelphia Union and looks certain to be involved at some point.
Of those desperate to be capped for the first time, Zavier Gozo will be near the head of the queue, that’s for sure. The forward-thinking midfielder, despite being a teenager, quickly became a key player for Real Salt Lake back at the start of the 2026 MLS season, delivering performances so strong that he’s since joined Crystal Palace in the EPL.
With so many youngsters likely to be involved, there needs to be a calming presence, and that will likely come from hugely experienced USMNT players such as Tyler Adams and Antonee Robinson.
What can we expect from the Peruvians?
The Peruvians aren’t expected to have as much youth on show, but what they have is quite a settled squad full of experienced campaigners, who would like nothing more than to spoil the occasion for the Stars and Stripes. Veteran forward Gianluca Lapadula will be ready to pounce unless the hosts can improve at the back.
When they last played on the road, Saturday’s visitors beat Haiti in Miami, delivering a dominant performance, though they didn’t look great at the back, so the hosts won’t be the only ones trying to tighten up. The Peruvians are without a clean sheet in six games on the road.
