Having failed to flex the muscles that they clearly have during the first round of group games, the Belgians go in search of a first win at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday. This time they’ll take on Iran, who also shared the spoils last time out, leaving Group G wide open.
After trying to make a fast start, the Red Devils quickly quietened down against the Egyptians, especially after going behind in the first half, and it took them until 20 minutes from time to equalize, after which they failed to really dominate, so Rudi Garcia’s men will be looking to step on the gas here. The Iranians stepped on the gas at times against New Zealand in their opener, scoring twice, but they also conceded twice, so they’ll be looking to improve defensively.
The Belgians do have the overall quality to win this, but given what we saw from both them and their opponents last time out, ‘Belgium to Win & Both Teams to Score’ appeals most in the early betting.

Belgium - Iran: Form Analysis

Did the Belgians play well in that opening game? Not exactly. Sure, they delivered moments of promise, and they did have a selection of what you’d call half-chances, but in the end, the Egyptians were more than deserving of the point, and that shows us the Red Devils failed to be at their best. This is a big opportunity for Rudi Garcia’s men to deliver a much-improved effort, but they’ll need to show more end-product to take all three points from a team that can be defiant.

The Iranians also may not have been delighted with their opening-game result. Sure, they didn’t lose, and they scored two goals, but their defending left plenty to be desired at times, which is disappointing given that they were up against a team that doesn’t typically score an abundance of goals. They’ll be keen to hit the Belgians on the break, much as the Pharaohs did, but they’ll absolutely be looking to tighten up at the back, and to do that, they may switch to a more low-block approach.

Belgium & Iran Squad Analysis
Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia now has some decisions to make. Romelu Lukaku was reportedly not fit enough to feature from the start against Egypt, but he did come off the bench in the second half. The big striker may not feature in the starting XI, most likely at the expense of Charles De Ketelaere, who looked a frustrated player for much of the contest last time out.
Mehdi Ghaedi came on at half time last time out and played positively, so he could come in from the start, most likely in place of Aria Yousefi.
Iranian head coach Amir Ghalenoei probably won’t want to change too much, which means that both Mohammad Mohebi and Ramin Rezaeian, who scored the goals last time out, will once again feature from the start. Our Belgium vs Iran Prediction
Let’s be honest, it was disappointing that the Belgians couldn’t make their extra quality pay against the Egyptians, and they’ll likely get on the front foot with real intensity in a bid to make amends here. If they don’t beat an Iranian team that does not boast the same level of player, then it will be another massive disappointment for the Red Devils.
Despite not playing well, Garcia’s men showed enough in that first game to suggest that they can get the win against a team that made hard work of defending against New Zealand, but they lack the defensive solidity to win without conceding, so much so that odds of +235 look generous.
