Italy and Mexico meet in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday with incredibly high stakes.

Daikin Park is the venue for the most significant game of the 2026 World Baseball Classic on Wednesday.

Starting at 7 p.m. ET, Italy face Mexico in a contest that could end the United States’ WBC campaign.

A win for Italy guarantees their place in the knockout phase and would ensure the U.S. also progress. Mexico winning would put all three teams at 3-1.

Mexico would be guaranteed of progression if they win. Whether the U.S. or Italy join them in the next round will depend on how many runs Mexico score.

If it’s four or fewer, Italy goes through. If it’s five or more, the U.S. would progress. This math changes if the game goes into extra innings, however, as the calculation is done using defensive outs recorded.

How We Got Here

Italy’s dramatic win over the U.S. on Tuesday set up this high-pressure matchup in Houston on Wednesday. Boasting a 3-0 record, the Italians have a chance to go 4-0 in the group stage and earn the top seed.

Mexico have gone 2-1 so far, with comfortable wins over Brazil and Great Britain and a two-run loss to the Americans.

Games between these nations have been dramatic in the past. In 2013, an Anthony Rizzo RBI completed a ninth-inning comeback as Italy won 6-5. Four years later, Italy scored five runs in the bottom of the nine to move to 2-0 against Mexico.

What To Expect

The over/under for this game is set at 8.5. We are tipping the over to land in our Italy vs Mexico prediction, which bodes well for the U.S.

Mexico must score at least five runs to win if the over hits, which would ensure the U.S. progress to the quarterfinals (providing the game is completed without the need for extra innings).

Aaron Nola is coming off the worst season of his career with a 6.01 ERA and will be getting the ball for Italy. Mexico is giving Javier Assad the start after he pitched 3.2 shutout innings against Brazil on Friday. Andrés Muñoz and Robert Garcia are also well-rested and available out of Mexico’s bullpen.

The respective pitching situations make it look like Mexico hold a significant advantage, but anything can happen in an elimination game.

History Makers

Italy delivered the biggest shock in WBC history against the Americans. Heading into the tournament, this match looked like it would be a battle for second place in the group, but it’s a very realistic possibility that both teams progress.

Mexico were semi-finalists in the last edition of the World Baseball Classic, while Italy fell at the quarter-final stage.

The U.S. failing to make it out of the group would be one of the most disappointing performances in any team sport, comparable to USA Basketball’s 2004 loss to Puerto Rico.
