Brazil and the US meet at Daikin Park in Houston today to open their 2026 World Baseball Classic schedules in what will be a David vs. Goliath encounter in Pool B. Brazil enters the main tournament as a true underdog, having fought through the Tucson qualifiers in 2025 where they overcame an early loss to Colombia to secure three straight victories, including a gritty 6-4 win over Germany.
While Brazil lacks active Major League stars, they have historically proven to be a difficult out; memories of their near-upset of Japan in the 2013 Classic still linger as a testament to their competitive spirit. Their recent exhibition form has focused on fundamental defense and maximizing their pitching staff's versatility, as they aim to play the role of spoiler in a group that features several perennial powerhouses.
The US, meanwhile, arrives in Houston with perhaps the most decorated roster in the history of the tournament, carrying the weight of a runner-up finish in 2023. Manager Mark DeRosa has a Dream Team at his disposal, and they have looked the part in their recent preparation.
Team USA dominated their two exhibition tune-ups in early March, including a 14-4 thrashing of the Colorado Rockies that saw five different Americans go deep. With the tournament favorites playing on home soil, the expectation is not just to win, but to dominate from the first pitch. Their recent form suggests a lineup that is already in mid-season mid-summer form, blending elite power with a newly fortified pitching staff that includes the reigning Cy Young winners.

Our Brazil vs United States Prediction
Over the past two weeks of spring training, the Americans have seen explosive performances from Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh, both of whom homered in their final tune-up game on March 4. Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. has been equally impressive, showcasing elite speed and contact that has him batting well over .350 in recent camp appearances.
On the injury front, the US will be without Jeremy Peña, who suffered a finger fracture on March 4, and Corbin Carroll, who is recovering from hand surgery. Brazil will lean on veteran Leonardo Reginatto, who was a standout in the qualifiers, and 17-year-old phenom Joseph Contreras, whose velocity has ticked up into the mid-90s lately. However, Brazil is missing star shortstop Bo Bichette, who opted out to focus on the MLB season following a knee injury.
The US is an overwhelming favorite. While Brazil's probable starter Bo Takahashi has international experience, the sheer depth of the US bullpen, headlined by Mason Miller and Edwin Diaz, makes a Brazilian comeback almost impossible to envision. The Americans have the upper hand in every statistical category, and playing in a dome in Houston only favors their power-heavy lineup. Unless Brazil can produce a historic pitching performance to keep the ball in the park, the US should trigger the mercy rule late in the game. Our prediction for Brazil vs. United States: Over 14.5 runs.
