Who Will Win the 2026 World Baseball Classic?

Boasting a stacked roster featuring Aaron Judge, Paul Skenes, Tarik Skubal, Bryce Harper, and an array of other All-Stars, the U.S. are the clear favorites to win the World Baseball Classic. The U.S. have begun to take the WBC more seriously in recent years and have put together their strongest roster yet after losing the final to Japan three years ago.

Japan have a very strong team once again, including Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. They have pedigree as three-time winners of the competition, and shouldn’t be overlooked, despite only nine of their players having contracts with MLB teams.

The Dominican Republic could prove to be the biggest threat to the U.S. Their offense reads like an All-Star team, with Jeremy Peña and Oneil Cruz likely to be on the bench. Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Julio Rodríguez is an outrageous infield. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Junior Caminero, Manny Machado, and Ketel Marte likely make up the infield. 

Where Puerto Rico have been decimated with Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, and Javier Báez ruled out through insurance issues, the Dominican Republic have a strong pitching staff, even if it’s overshadowed by their offense.

Groups for World Baseball Classic

The World Baseball Classic begins with a pool stage, featuring all 20 of the qualifying teams. These nations are split into four pools of five, with the three host nations (Japan, Puerto Rico, and the USA) prioritized before going off a combination of world rankings, competitive balance, and fan interest.

The top two teams from each pool progress to the knockout phase. It is win-or-go-home from the quarterfinals onwards, just like other World Cup events in soccer and basketball. 

• Pool A: Puerto Rico, Canada, Cuba, Panama, Colombia
• Pool B: USA, Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, Brazil
• Pool C: Japan, Australia, Korea Republic, Czechia, Chinese Taipei
• Pool D: Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Israel, Nicaragua

How Does World Baseball Classic Work?

Think of the World Baseball Classic in two parts. An initial pool stage has all 20 nations, featuring rank outsiders like Great Britain, Czechia, and Nicaragua. Eight teams – the top two from each pool – progress to the knockout round, which begins with quarterfinals. 

Each team plays the other four teams in their pool. There is a dedicated venue for each pool. Pool A’s games are all played at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, Pool B at Daikin Park, Pool C at Tokyo Dome, and Pool D at LoanDepot Park.

The quarter finals, semis, and final are one-off, winner-takes-all games.
