The second game due to kick off at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is between South Korea and Czechia. Drawn in a group with one of the tournament hosts, this is an important first game for both teams, at least it is if either has serious sights set on making the knockouts.
The South Koreans exploded onto the world soccer stage back in 2002, when they reached the semi-finals of FIFA’s biggest tournament as co-hosts, but have since failed to repeat that level of success. For the Czech’s, the semi-finals continue to prove elusive, and they’ve not made the knockouts since playing as Czechoslovakia back in 1990.
This really is a massive opening game for both sides, and both should view this as a winnable contest, so really, we should see two teams willing to have a go at each other. If we also consider the fact that the Czech’s have been quite open in recent times, regularly scoring and conceding in games, then ‘Both Teams to Score’ starts to appeal more than the early odds may suggest.

Korea Republic - Czechia: Form Analysis
Back in March, it looked as if the South Koreans were struggling to build momentum ahead of this huge summer of soccer. They took a hammering from the Ivorians, before losing to the Austrians. Fortunately, they’ve since improved, winning each of their two recent warm-up games, beating Trinidad and Tobago in comprehensive fashion, before delivering a more resolute performance to beat El Salvador. Such results are hardly notable, but at the very least, the Taegeuk Warriors should now head into this opening game with renewed confidence.
Such results are hardly notable, but at the very least, the Taegeuk Warriors should now head into this opening game with renewed confidence.
As for the Czech’s, well, from a form point of view, they’ve done very little wrong in recent times. They showed no shortage of fighting spirit to defeat both Ireland and Denmark in the play-offs to reach the tournament, while in their warm-up games, they showed a little of everything, beating both Kosovo and Guatemala. Sure, Miroslav Koubek’s have some rather obvious defensive deficiencies, but they’re battle-ready and have offensive quality, so don’t be shocked if they pick up some positive results over the next few weeks.

Korea Republic & Czechia Squad Analysis
South Korean head coach Hong Myungbo made plenty of changes ahead of the final warm-up game, resting key players such as Son Heung-Min and Kang-In Lee, both of whom are expected to feature in the starting XI here. Jen Castrop is another key player who should be back from the outset having featured off the bench last time out. Having scored twice recently, Gue-Sung Cho could also feature.
Patrick Schick is a guaranteed starter up top, and his inclusion means that this Czechia team certainly packs an offensive punch.
Miroslav Koubek has some interesting decisions as he tries to find the right balance for Czechia. Patrick Schick is a guaranteed starter up top, and his inclusion means that this certainly packs an offensive punch. In support of Schick will be Pavel Sulc, though it’s going to be a toss up between Lukas Provod and Denis Visinsky on the other side. The castle experienced Vladimir Darida, who recently came out on international retirement, will add some invaluable experience in the central midfield should he start.

Our Korea Republic vs Czechia Prediction
As mentioned above, this game will absolutely be viewed as one to attack by both teams, so we should see two teams going at it in Zapopan. Does the early betting market reflect this accurately enough? Not quite, meaning that odds of +100 look a little generous. After all, both teams have offensive quality, but in big games, over the last couple of years, neither the South Koreans, nor the Czech's have defended resolutely.
If we consider also that this Czechia team had made a clear habit of scoring and conceding, even doing so against weak teams in their warm-up games, 'Both Teams to Score' really does like leniently priced at +100.
Our South Korea vs Czechia Pick: Both Teams to Score.
