One of the marquee matchups of Matchday 1 of the Champions League group stage pits Liverpool against Atlético Madrid. The game will take place this Wednesday at Anfield. Under the guidance of Andoni Iraola, the Reds are highly anticipated this season. They made some major signings over the summer, with the arrivals of Ronald Araujo, Victor Muñoz, and Bradley Barcola. The Mersey club has the advantage of kicking off the campaign in front of its home fans. Always very strong at home, they could very well send a strong message to the competition.
Atlético Madrid is still considered an underdog in the Champions League. It’s never easy to beat Diego Simeone’s men. However, the Madrid club won’t necessarily be traveling to England brimming with confidence. They’ve just suffered their first setback of the La Liga season with a heavy 3-0 loss on the road to Athletic Bilbao.

Liverpool - Atletico Madrid: Form Analysis
It took Liverpool a while to get off the mark in this new Premier League season. They were held to draws in their first two matchdays by Newcastle United (2-2) and Nottingham Forest (2-2). It wasn’t until Matchday 3 that the Reds managed to secure a victory against Ipswich Town (0-2). Alexander Isak took advantage of the opportunity to boost his confidence with a two-goal performance.
The team, now coached by Andoni Iraola, is also using this momentum to get into top form ahead of their Champions League campaign. In fact, they’ll kick off the group stage with a very tough first test.
Atlético Madrid is coming off a heavy defeat on the road against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga (3-0).
Like their next opponent, Atlético Madrid has high hopes for this new edition of the Champions League. However, it can’t be said that the team is at the top of its game heading into this first matchday of the group stage. The Colchoneros hadn’t gotten off to a bad start in La Liga, having earned 7 points after their first 3 matchdays.
However, they suffered their first setback last weekend. Diego Simeone and his men were soundly defeated on the road against Athletic Bilbao (3-0). That’s not the best way to prepare for what is always a tricky trip to Anfield.

Liverpool & Atletico Madrid Squad Analysis
For their Champions League debut, Liverpool will be without Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, and Hugo Ekitiké. However, Andoni Iraola has most of his key players available for this highly anticipated matchup. Alisson Becker is already in good form in goal for the Reds. In front of him, Jérémy Jacquet has been very solid since the start of the season when he’s been deployed at center back.
Dominik Szoboszlai could once again be deployed in midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister. Up front, Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak have been a perfect match. Last weekend, Gakpo provided two assists to Isak. Bradley Barcola came off the bench for the final 30 minutes against Ipswich Town. The former PSG player is hoping for even more playing time this midweek.
Bradley Barcola made his debut for Liverpool last weekend.
As for Atlético Madrid, Arnau Ortiz is suspended for this away game. In addition, Alexander Sorloth is injured. Diego Simeone will certainly want to rely on a strong defense at Anfield. As a result, Jan Oblak will be expected to shine in goal. This could also be Cristian Romero’s chance to make his first start in central defense. Simeone has other talented players at his disposal in the back, including Marcos Llorente, Marc Pubill, and Alejandro Grimaldo.
In midfield, Morten Hjulmand, signed this summer, is already making an impact alongside Pablo Barrios. The Colchoneros also have plenty of firepower up front. Lee Kang-in is off to a strong start with his new team. He’ll be looking to trouble the Reds’ defense, as will Ademola Lookman, Alex Baena, and Julian Alvarez, who ultimately decided to stay in the Spanish capital.
