As the reigning two-time European champion, Paris Saint-Germain is looking to defend its title in this year’s Champions League. On Matchday 1 of the group stage, PSG will face Slovan Bratislava this Wednesday at the Parc des Princes. Struggling early in the Ligue 1 season, the team coached by Luis Enrique hopes to use the return of Europe’s premier club competition to boost its confidence. They shouldn’t give their next opponent the slightest chance!
Slovan Bratislava had to fight hard to qualify for the Champions League group stage. They advanced through three qualifying rounds to secure their spot in the tournament. The Slovak club must therefore already be thrilled just to be part of the action. There’s no doubt that Yaya Touré’s men will now try to fight for a spot in the playoffs. However, they certainly don’t expect to get their first points on the board during this trip to the French capital...

PSG - SK Slovan Bratislava: Form Analysis
This isn’t the start to the season PSG had hoped for! They were off to a great start, winning the UEFA Super Cup against Aston Villa (2-1). But since then, things have been much more difficult for the club from the French capital. First, they lost the Trophée des Champions to RC Lens (1-0). The Parisian team has been unable to get back on track for the resumption of Ligue 1.
They still haven’t won after their first three league matches. After hard-fought draws against Stade Rennais (2-2) and Lille (2-2), the team coached by Luis Enrique was just defeated by AS Monaco, despite opening the scoring (1-2). A strong response is expected from the Parisians as they kick off their Champions League campaign.
PSG is struggling in its Ligue 1 debut this season.
Slovan Bratislava advanced through the Champions League qualifiers. They entered the competition in the second round! They managed to defeat FC Iberia 1999 (aggregate score: 3-1), Mjällby AIF (aggregate score: 4-1), and NK Celje (aggregate score: 3-2 after extra time). On the domestic front, they had little trouble qualifying for the round of 32 in the Slovak Cup.
In the Chance Liga, however, Yaya Touré’s men are going through a somewhat more challenging stretch. After getting off to a perfect start by winning their first four matches, they have just suffered two consecutive losses against Michalovce (1-2) and Dunajská Streda (2-0). This is not the best way to prepare for this away match against the defending Champions League champions.

PSG & SK Slovan Bratislava Squad Analysis
PSG shouldn’t have any absences for their Champions League opener. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Luis Enrique field his strongest lineup to get back on the winning track. No surprises are expected on defense. To join Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, and Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes should return to the lineup after serving a suspension for the start of Ligue 1.
Midfield is one of the Parisian side’s strengths. Vitinha and João Neves will start in the center of the field. Up front, Luis Enrique has plenty of options. After getting a few days of rest, Ousmane Dembélé came off the bench in the last match against AS Monaco. It remains to be seen whether he’ll start in the attacking trio! Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are expected to start.
Suspended for the start of Ligue 1, Nuno Mendes will be able to play again for PSG.
For Slovan Bratislava, the only player who will be missing is Mykola Kukharevych. The Slovak club will certainly need a very solid defense if it hopes to achieve an excellent result against the defending champion. In particular, it can count on the experience of Kevin Wimmer. The former FC Cologne and Tottenham player remains a key figure on his team.
In midfield, Daiki Matsuoka will be one to watch closely. He has scored two goals in his last four Chance Liga matches and could very well start this Wednesday night. Up front, Suleiman Camara has been outstanding during the qualifiers. In addition to an assist, he has scored two goals. He’ll be looking to build on that performance for the first match of the group stage.
