We’ll soon find out who the champion is at the 2026 WTA 1000 tournament in Rome! This Thursday, the semifinals will be played in front of the Italian crowd, featuring an explosive matchup between Romania’s Sorana Cirstea and the United States’ Coco Gauff!

And this matchup is nothing new this season, as Sorana Cirstea and Coco Gauff are facing off for the third time in a WTA 1000 tournament! They faced off in the round of 16 in Miami and then in the quarterfinals in Madrid, and while the American came out on top both times, the two players have always played a tight, three-set match. And this Italian tournament seems to be the Romanian’s to win, as she caused a sensation by eliminating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16 in a three-set match, then top-15 player Linda Noskova, and finally Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in two straight-set matches.

Coco Gauff, for her part, has yet to win a title this season but came close to victory in the Miami Open final against Aryna Sabalenka in March. On clay, however, the 22-year-old’s record is less impressive, as she was eliminated in the round of 16 in Madrid by Linda Noskova. The Romanian, however, managed to defeat that same opponent in this Rome tournament and is expected to enter the match with high confidence.
