The Seattle Storm visit the Phoenix Mercury on May 17, Saturday, at the PHX Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
What would the Mercury look like without Diana Taurasi? After 20 years, Taurasi has retired from the WNBA, ushering a new era in Phoenix basketball. Moreover, they parted ways with 6-foot-9 Brittney Griner, officially breaking the core of the Mercury team that last won a championship in 2014.
To add salt to the wound, Phoenix will also miss the services of Kahlea Cooper and Natasha Mack. Cooper is coming off a career-best season that saw her average 21.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. The Mercury will rely on newly-acquired players Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas in this match against the Storm.
As for the Storm, only Katie Lou Samuelson is listed on the team's injury report. They retained their core of Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins-Smith, and Ezi Magbegor. This is the squad that made it to the first round of last year's playoffs, so chemistry shouldn't be an issue.
Roster continuity will be an advantage for the Storm, as they go up against a new-look Mercury squad. Look for the veteran duo of Diggins-Smith and Ogwumike to make things difficult for Phoenix.
