The Atlanta Dream and Phoenix Mercury meet today, with Atlanta trying to turn early-season depth and home-court control into another statement result against a Phoenix team still shaping its rhythm. The Dream have looked more complete than their record alone suggests. They opened with encouraging work, pushed Las Vegas to the final possession in an 85-84 loss, then answered with an 86-69 win over Dallas that showed their defensive edge and late-game separation. Rhyne Howard returned from concussion protocol in that Dallas game and immediately changed the feel of Atlanta's offense, finishing with 25 points, eight assists and four rebounds. That matters because the Dream had already been competitive while patching together lineups around short-term absences. Howard's return gives them a cleaner hierarchy. Phoenix enters with enough veteran force to make this uncomfortable.
The Mercury still have proven creators, strong frontcourt passing and enough scoring to punish slow defensive rotations. Alyssa Thomas remains the tone-setter because she can organize offense without needing every possession to become a one-on-one sequence. Kahleah Copper gives Phoenix the downhill scoring piece that can tilt a game quickly, while Jovana Nogic has given the Mercury extra spacing and shot-making. Still, Phoenix has not looked as settled as Atlanta. The Mercury's ceiling is obvious, but their margin can shrink when the ball sticks or when they are forced into longer defensive possessions.

Our Atlanta Dream vs Phoenix Mercury Prediction
The individual form points Atlanta's way. Howard's return gives the Dream a three-level scorer and playmaker next to Allisha Gray, who has already carried stretches of the offense with strong shot-making. Angel Reese has been uneven as a scorer, but her rebounding remains a real stabilizer, especially when Atlanta needs second-chance possessions or a defensive stop inside. Jordin Canada's pace and ball pressure also give the Dream a clearer backcourt identity, while Madina Okot and Naz Hillmon have helped cover frontcourt minutes with Brionna Jones unavailable after knee surgery.
Phoenix still has enough proven talent to keep this close. Thomas gives the Mercury a steady half-court organizer, Copper remains their most dangerous downhill scorer and Sami Whitcomb's absence matters because it removes a veteran shooter and secondary ball-handler from the rotation. Kathryn Westbeld is also out for the season after suffering a torn ACL, which trims Phoenix's frontcourt options before the rotation is fully settled. With Atlanta at home, Howard active again and the Dream carrying more two-way balance, the upper hand sits with Atlanta unless Phoenix slows the pace and turns the game into a possession-by-possession half-court fight. Our prediction for Atlanta Dream vs. Phoenix Mercury: Under 167.5 points.
