It was a good start for the world number 14, who arrived in New York not in the best shape of his life after mixed performances since June (eliminated in the second round at Eastbourne and Wimbledon, and in the third round at Cincinnati). But it may be when expectations around Tommy Paul are lower that the local player (originally from New Jersey) will be able to shine at Flushing Meadows, a tournament where he has never reached the quarterfinals.
