The San Jose Earthquakes visit Minnesota United in what could be a potential playoff preview, given the teams’ positions in the Western Conference. And given the Quakes’ recent history against the Loons, that’s about the last thing that San Jose wants. The Quakes haven’t beaten Minnesota since 2022, and that’s the only time they’ve had things go their way in this matchup since 2018.
The Loons have otherwise dominated the series, avoiding defeat in the other 12 of the teams’ past 13 meetings. Each time, Minnesota has been able to dictate the tempo. The Loons prefer more of a defensive game, and that’s exactly the way the matches have gone for the past few seasons. The last time someone scored more than two goals came in 2020, of course won by Minnesota.

San Jose has been rather consistent as of late, scoring exactly once in five of six matches. The only exception came in a win at Dallas, and that was an anomaly: Dallas picked up two red cards in a 4-2 Quakes victory. Otherwise, San Jose has been stuck on one goal.
That hasn’t necessarily been a bad thing, as the defense has improved a fair amount from its early struggles. The only loss for the Quakes in that stretch was a 2-1 setback at St. Louis; they’ve taken nine points overall from six matches.
