Georgia takes on Spain on Thursday, August 28, at the Spyros Kyprianou Arena in Cyprus.
Spain, once the overwhelming favorites of the EuroBasket, have their work cut out in front of them. They lost five of their six preparation games, so it remains to be seen if they could build a momentum early on.
The only bright spot is that in those five losses, Spain only lost by one possession in two games. They still have a good enough roster to contend, but the question lies on how soon they can develop chemistry.
Leading the Spaniards will be frontcourt players Santi Aldama, Juancho Hernangomez, and Willy Hernangomez, all of which have NBA experience. Sergio Scariolo, the long-tenured head coach of the Spanish national team, is on his farewell tournament.
On the other side, Georgia failed to tally a win in their six preparation games. This is still a talented team, though.
Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze and San Antonio Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili will lead the charge for Georgia. Look for veteran Tornike Shengelia to fill big shoes on both ends of the floor.
