The final Grand Slam of the season opens this week in the USA, and in this first round it's Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet and Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov who will be battling it out for a place in the second round. Kyrian Jacquet, 23, is taking part in a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Entering through qualifying, he won his first match against unseeded Tim van Rijthoven before coming back to beat Seong Chan Hong in his second match. He booked his place in the main draw by beating Jurij Rodionov in a tight duel in the first set. While the Frenchman should be motivated to make a fine first appearance here, his opponent of the day should soon demonstrate his superiority.

Grigor Dimitrov, seeded 9th, is taking part in this Grand Slam for the 14th time in his career and has already been a semi-finalist here in 2019. Although he was stopped in the first round in Cincinnati by Fabian Marozsan a few days ago, the Bulgarian is back since the injury that forced him to withdraw before the Wimbledon Grand Slam Round of 8 in favor of Daniil Medvedev. At the French Open, Grigor Dimitrov had also won his first 4 rounds to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament against the new world number 1 Jannik Sinner, and should therefore not be intimidated by his first-round opponent.
