Taiwan and Japan meet on tomorrow in Pool C play at the World Baseball Classic, a matchup that always carries more weight than this group stage suggests. Japan arrives as the reigning WBC champion and the marquee attraction at the Tokyo Dome, while Taiwan comes in with immediate urgency after losing its opener and with the knowledge that, in this format, the math can get tight in a hurry.
From a results standpoint, Taiwan's last few days have already been a swing of emotion. In its final warm-up on March 3, Taiwan beat the farm team of Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks 5–1, a game that featured early offense and a pitching plan designed to keep arms fresh for pool play.
But once pool play began, Australia blanked Taiwan 3–0, and the opener immediately sharpened the stakes: only the top two teams in each pool move on to the quarterfinals in the US. Japan, meanwhile, enters pool play with expectations that are always unfair and almost always earned. Its entire operation is built to peak in March, not merely participate.

Our Taiwan vs Japan Prediction
The current form angle is clearest for Taiwan's bats and depth arms. Stuart Fairchild reached base four times in the warm-up (two hits, a walk, and an RBI), and the decisive stretch also featured Chen Chen-wei and captain Chen Chieh-hsien driving rallies. On the mound, Taiwan used a different pitcher for each of the first seven innings of that warm-up, striking out eight and allowing only four hits, a strategy that speaks to how carefully it plans pitching workload. In the opener, starter Jo-Hsi Hsu worked four scoreless innings before the game turned on home runs. Japan's prep has been steadier: it finished 4–2 in exhibition play and then turned its attention fully to Pool C at the Tokyo Dome.
Injury-wise, the biggest constraints are as much about deployment as about who is “out.” Taiwan's warm-up usage suggests it will keep the bullpen flexible again to chase matchups and protect key arms across the week. Japan has its own planning: Shohei Ohtani is back for Samurai Japan as a designated hitter and is not expected to pitch, while Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Yūsei Kikuchi headline a pitching staff that blends MLB regulars with top domestic arms.
Japan clearly has the upper hand — roster depth, home environment, and more pathways to win (power, contact, or a bullpen squeeze). Taiwan's best-case script is to shrink the game early, string together baserunners, and force Japan into high-leverage at-bats before the late innings arrive. Our prediction for Taiwan vs. Japan: Over 8.5 runs.
