Booked at -275 moneyline, Frances Tiafoe is gearing up for a difficult third-round clash with the upset-minded Jan-Lennard Struff, who has just axed down a top-10 player in the previous round.

Aiming to better his semifinal finish at the 2024 US Open, Tiafoe overcame a couple of testy battles to reach the round of 32 of this year’s tournament in Flushing Meadows. Tiafoe ran over Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round 6-3 7-6(6) 6-3 before fending off a spirited challenge from fellow American Martin Damm in the second round 6-4 7-5 6-7(8) 7-5. Tiafoe is a decent 13-8 in hard-court matches this year. But unlike last year’s campaign that saw the American reach the final of the 2025 Cincinnati Open and go all the way to the semifinal of the US Open, Tiafoe’s 2025 hard-court campaign hasn’t been as smooth. On Wednesday, the German pulled off arguably his best match of the year, firing 28 aces and winning 74 points behind the first to upset world’s No.11 Holger Rune 7-6(5) 2-6 6-3 4-6 7-5. The win gave Struff his first top-20 win this year and a chance to move into the round of 16 of the US Open for the first time in his career.
