Cruz Azul will look to start the new Liga MX season in style when they host Mazatlan at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario on Sunday night. After reaching the semi finals of the 2025 Clausura tournament, Cruz Azul led America 2-0 on aggregate with under 25 minutes of their second leg remaining. Meanwhile, Mazatlan endured an horrendous 2024-2025 season, finishing last in the coefficient table, after picking up just six wins in their 34 matches. Defence was a huge problem for Mazatlan during the Clasura and they kept just two clean sheets during the entire tournament. Unless head coach Robert Siboldi can resolve those defensive frailties, it is hard to see them challenging for honors this time around.
