However, he remained mentally strong and raised his level of play to turn the tide in the next two sets. Unfortunately, the round of 32 proved too tough against Zverev (No. 3), and he was eliminated 6-4, 6-4. After nearly two weeks without a match, Nakashima started the US Open with a 3-2 victory over De Jong (No. 83). Leading one set to love, he slowed down and allowed his opponent to get back into the match. Trailing 2-1, the world No. 31 once again drew on his mental strength and ended up winning the last two sets thanks to his return to flawless serving.

For his part, clay-court specialist Kym chose to stay on that surface until August before being eliminated in the round of 16 at the Bonn Challenger. He then entered the US Open qualifiers. The Swiss player easily defeated Taberner (ranked 99th) and Zheng (ranked 321st) in two sets, then outclassed Wu (ranked 211th) in the final round 6-3/6-2. Against all odds, he found himself in the Grand Slam main draw, where he faced Quinn (ranked 84th) in the first round. To everyone's surprise, Kym won the first two sets 6-3/6-2. However, he cracked under pressure in the third, losing 6-3. Nevertheless, he managed to pull himself together to win the fourth set in a tiebreak.
