We are being treated to a battle of two of the top heavyweights in the world on Saturday night. The #4-ranked Alexander Volkov will take on the #5-ranked Rizvan Kuniev. The winner could be up for a title shot against Ciryl Gane in the near future.
Volkov is one of the most veteran fighters in all of the UFC and specifically the heavyweight division. He is 40-11-0 over his career and is 6-1 over his last 7 fights. His lone loss came against the current champion and came down to a split decision. Since that loss, he defeated Jailton Almeida by split decision and most recently grabbed a unanimous decision win over Waldo Cortes Acosta. At 37, the window to become UFC champion is quickly beginning to close. This could be the biggest opportunity left for him.
Kuniev has only 1/3 of the number of career fights that Volkov has had. What he lacks in experience, he makes up for in violence. He has 9 of his 14 career wins coming via a finish.
