Australian Ajla Tomljanovic faces American Jessica Pegula in the second round of the China Open. It will be the fifth head-to-head between the two players.
Tomljanovic snapped a three-match losing streak by advancing to the second round of the China Open with a victory over Yulia Starodubtseva. The Ukrainian took a 4-0 lead in the first set and, despite the comeback, had the opportunity to serve for the first set. However, Tomljanovic got another break and dominated the tiebreak before dominating the second set and clinching the victory 7-6(1) 6-2.
Jessica Pegula, seeded number five, was part of the US team that reached the Billie Jean King Cup final but lost to Italy after being beaten by Jasmine Paolini in the decisive singles match. Pegula had arrived in good form from the US Open, where she reached the semifinals. In a rematch of last year's final, she lost to Aryna Sabalenka despite winning the first set and putting in an excellent overall performance. She has also won three titles this season, all on different surfaces.
