UFC Freedom 250: When, Where, Why, & More
by Sam Cox
Anticipated and controversial in equal measure, UFC Freedom 250 has been masterminded by UFC CEO Dana White and Donald Trump. The seven-fight bonanza takes place this weekend, featuring two title bouts in front of what will be a select and curated in-person audience.
White and Trump have a close relationship. Trump gave UFC a platform when it was struggling decades ago, allowing fights to be held at his casino in Las Vegas, and the President has often been seen ringside.
The ties between Trump and UFC run far deeper than hosting this one-off event. People with links to UFC and WWE have been involved in Trump’s inner-circle during his political career, and the President has been described as an ‘expert’ on all things UFC.
Away from the contentious decision to hold this fight, a vast team has been challenged with putting on a mammoth spectacle. That’s meant logistical challenges, plenty of security checks, and huge expense.
What’s the Headline Event of UFC Freedom 250?
The final fight of this extraordinary show is a unification match between UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria and interim champion Justin Gaethje. Topuria, boasting a 17-0 record, is a UFC superstar and the clear favorite for this contest.
Gaethje has missed out on undisputed opportunities in the past, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2020 and Charles Oliveira in 2022.
The pre-fight build-up has been packed with the usual antics, with both fighters taking to social media to hype up the occasion.
Topuria is clearly feeling confident. He said, "All I'm going to need is two minutes with you. I'm going to put you to sleep in front of your whole family, your country, in front of everyone."
Gaethje, it’s worth noting, has only been finished in the first round once in his career. He’s expecting a long fight.
Gaethje said, “He’s backed himself into a corner. Because when we go to a second round, how’s he going to justify that to himself? We go to the third round and he’s bleeding, how’s he going to justify that to himself when it should have been over already in his mind?
“I don’t go in there with expectations. I expect a 25-minute war and I expect to have to dig deep to overcome a lot of adversity and I’m ready to do that.”
How Many People Will Watch UFC Freedom 250?
White is expecting record-breaking numbers for this event. With poor weather expected in the capital, including a threat of thunder and lightning, White remains highly optimistic.
The CEO of UFC said, “I say we do more than three million pay-per-view buys.”
He added, “It’s definitely a one-of-one event. And when you think about where we came from, and how this whole sport started, and how it was frowned upon in the United States, to now be headed to the White House is pretty surreal.”
Despite the record for domestic MMA viewers in the United States being only nine million, compared with the Super Bowl breaking 120 million earlier this year, White believes UFC Freedom 250 can succeed on a previously unheard-of scale.
“For UFC fans all over the world, this is a very unique experience for everybody. We’re expecting Super Bowl-type numbers for this fight.”
UFC has already broken new ground with its event at The Sphere in Las Vegas, but this is another significant step-up for White and co.
