The Rome Masters 1000 kicks off this week in Italy! And in the first round, the home crowd is in for a French-Belgian showdown between Belgium’s Zizou Bergs and France’s Terence Atmane. 

Zizou Bergs is no stranger to strong starts at Masters 1000 tournaments. Indeed, he defeated J-L. Struff at Indian Wells and then J. Brooksby in Miami before eliminating France’s Adrian Mannarino in Monte Carlo in early April. And it was on the Monegasque clay courts that he had his most successful run, going on to eliminate top-15 player Andrey Rublev in just two sets to face A. Zverev in the round of 16. However, he narrowly lost in the final of the Aix-en-Provence Challenger last weekend to A. Tabilo will likely be looking to bounce back in this Italian tournament.

Terence Atmane, for his part, failed to advance past the first round at Indian Wells against G. Dimitrov but enjoyed much greater success in Miami afterward. In fact, he strung together three consecutive wins in Florida, notably defeating Arthur Rinderknech and Felix Auger-Aliassime, and came close to a fourth victory against Frances Tiafoe in the round of 16. On clay, the 24-year-old also made a successful debut in Monte Carlo against E. Quinn but was unable to string together wins on that surface before arriving in Madrid last week, where he reached the round of 32.
