The final women's match that I'll be getting involved in ahead of Thursday's early-morning action (for those in the US) at the Australian Open is the one between Wang Xin Yu and Jelena Ostapenko. The early betting would have us believe that the Chinese competitor, currently ranked 46th in the world, is the most likely winner of this showdown, but I'm far from convinced. In fact, the Latvian, who is the world number 24 and is Grand Slam champion, deserves more respect.
Ostapenko won the French Open back in 2017, and despite not adding to that since, she has delivered some decent efforts at other Grand Slams, including the Australian Open, where she reached the quarter-finals back in 2023. She looked in decent form during the first round and is now up against a player who has recently struggled against those ranked above her.

Make no mistake about it, Jelena Ostapenko is often a frustrating player to follow, but she's undeniably talented and when she's on it, she's a fantastic player. Her first couple of efforts in 2026 weren't overly convincing, but she looked more like her old self during the first round, beating a player of not dissimilar quality to Wang Xin Yu in decisive fashion, winning 6-4, 6-4.
If the Latvian can repeat her first-round effort here, then she'll come out on top, it really is that simple, and with that in mind, I cannot help but conclude that odds of +110 are generous. As far as I'm concerned, it is Ostapenko, who is higher in the rankings, who should be the favorite, not the other way around.
