Much of the soccer focus this weekend will be on the beginning of the rebranded and relaunched Club World Cup, but let's not forget that summer is often the time for international soccer, and that's exactly what we've got in the US and Canada, where the CONCACAF Gold Cup begins. Mauricio Pochettino's men will begin their campaign on Sunday, when they'll take on Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose.
Realistically, this is something of banana-skin opener for the USMNT, who are absolutely expected to beat their Caribbean opponents. the pressure to win well, though, may weigh heavy on the shoulders of the US players. Even if they win comfortably, people aren't likely to be too impressed. Similarly, this is a bit of a shot-to-nothing game for the visitors. In terms of recent form, the Mauricio Pochettino's men haven't exactly they thrived. If they were planning to warm up for this tournament by picking up wins, then they really did get it wrong, losing most recently to Switzerland by four goals to zero. Prior to that, they lost by two goals to one against the Turks, which followed a 2-1 defeat to Canada in the UEFA Nations League back in March. The hosts have now lost four on the bounce.
For Trinidad & Tobago, winning form is also lacking. They lost to Costa Rica in World Cup Qualifying last time out, while their only recent wins came against minnows Saint Kitts and Nevic. Such form won't exactly help them here, let's be honest. Back in June, they faced both Ghana and Jamaica in friendly action, losing both game, conceding a total of seven goals.
