In this round of 16 match at the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona, two players separated by just five spots in the ATP rankings will face off in front of the Spanish crowd: Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Britain’s Jack Draper.
Tomás Martín Etcheverry appears to be on a strong run this season, having regained his top form and re-entered the top 30. Indeed, he racked up a string of victories in February and claimed the title at the Rio de Janeiro tournament against A. Tabilo. A quarterfinalist in Houston earlier this month, he also pushed world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz to the limit, losing 1-6, 6-4, 3-6 in the round of 16 at Monte Carlo last week.
Jack Draper, for his part, has not yet begun his 2026 clay-court season. Sidelined from the tennis courts for several months due to a hand injury, the 24-year-old made his return to the courts on February 23 and has therefore played only eight matches in total this year. Trying his luck at Indian Wells, where he was the defending champion, he managed to string together impressive victories against F. Cerundolo and N. Djokovic but did not advance past the quarterfinals, losing to D. Medvedev.
