For the second time at the 2026 French Open, Alexander Zverev will take to the court on Wednesday. Having made light work of leaving Benjamin Bonzi behind in the first round, winning in straight sets, the German, who is currently ranked as the third best male player on the planet, will be up against Tomas Machac. On paper, this is a more difficult task for the former Roland Garros finalist, but is it so hard that we shouldn't expect him to win in convincing style? Absolutely not.
Machac can compete on clay, and he certainly looked in decent shape during the first round, but this is a sizable step up, one that he is likely to struggle to take in his stride. The Czech player lost convincingly when these two players previously met on a clay court, and that was at Roland Garros, so don't hold out too much hope for the world number 43.
