This Friday, the round of 32 matches will take place in front of the Spanish crowd at the Madrid tournament! And in one of these matchups, Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante and the United States’ Tommy Paul will face off. 

Thiago Agustin Tirante caused a sensation at the Houston tournament earlier this month, defeating top-10 player Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals before falling to his compatriot T. A. Tirante in the semifinals. However, his recent performances in the Masters 1000 tournaments have not been particularly promising, as he was eliminated in the qualifying rounds at both Indian Wells and Miami. 

Tommy Paul, for his part, enters this Madrid tournament as a seeded player. Also having put together a strong run at the Houston tournament in early April, the 28-year-old managed to defeat Frances Tiafoe and then R. A. Burruchaga to claim his first title in the American city. That title must have done the American good, as he has just re-entered the top 20 and won 100% of his first-round matches at Indian Wells and Miami. In fact, he even reached the quarterfinals in Florida in his last hard-court tournament.
