After suffering a hamstring injury in March, the Dutchman had struggled to regain his reflexes but now appears to be on the right track to fully recover. This Grand Slam, in which he is competing for the fifth time, should be the ideal setting for a comeback, as he has always managed to win his first-round match here.
Matteo Arnaldi, for his part, is competing at the French Open for the fourth time in his career. Although he has suffered numerous defeats this season, the Italian has largely managed to put his misfortunes behind him this May, having racked up seven consecutive wins on clay by claiming the title at the Cagliari Challenger against former top-20 player H. Hurkacz before reaching the round of 16 at the Rome Masters 1000.
